On the first day at
FGCU we were divided into three small groups of two to deploy in canoes. Each
group was sent to different locations: first group went to the head of the
imperial river, second group went to the mouth, and last group went to fish
trap bay. The goal of each group was to measure the current speed at a variety
of points along the estuary by dropping an orange in water. This is about as
fun as it sounds my partner Danielle and I had to make up songs to stay
entertained. We originally only had to do four trials each ten minutes long
however we decided to do nine trials because during two trials boats hit our
orange and disrupted our sample. Basically We had to drop an orange and let the
current take it for ten minutes recording the starting and ending GPS coordinates
in each trial. These coordinates would be used with Google earth to calculate
the distances. While gathering data we were visited by a manatee, which I told
Danielle she would get to see, at least once so glad it happened.
