Watch out for those oysters!

On Wednesday at FGCU, two sites were visited; bridge 41 and marker 108. Within these two sites, the group broke up into six people each. One group was snorkeling, analyzing the data for benthic and shore cover, while the other was collecting data in the mangroves.

The data was analyzed by the snorkelers using a basic data sheet, concluding if the covers had certain aspects present (0-10% cover), common (10%-50% cover), or dominant (50-100% cover). This was visual analysis. For example, rock and shell at mile marker 108 was the dominant for benthic cover whereas the benthic cover for bridge 41 was dominated by mud and sand.

The mangroves had five flags indicating replicates within the site's sample. Saturated soil samples were tested for salinity using a refractometer and then dried later for organic content. The five replicates were used to measure efflux, respiration, and gas exchange using an Infrared Gas Analyzer. The results proved that organic content was directly related to efflux rates.
